Energy and Environment
Energy and environment are essential for sustainable development. The poor are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and lack of access to clean, affordable energy services. These issues are also global as climate change, loss of biodiversity and ozone layer depletion cannot be addressed by countries acting alone. UNDP helps countries strengthen their capacity to address these challenges at global, national and community levels, seeking out and sharing best practices, providing innovative policy advice and linking partners through pilot projects that help poor people build sustainable livelihoods.
The Russian economy possesses great potential for enhanced and sustainable GDP growth through more efficient utilization of primary energy sources and environmental conservation measures. UNDP offers ongoing support to the Government in a number of strategically vital areas, including climate change mitigation and Kyoto protocol implications, that promote integrated development for a sustainable future. UNDP Russia helps to meet the challenges in the implementation and enforcement of legislation and policies, the provision of adequate institutional and financial frameworks for effective pollution abatement, investments in energy efficiency and protection of biodiversity, such as that of the Far East, development of capacity to comply with international environment agreements.
