20.01.2010. UNDP/GEF project on biodiversity conservation in the Altai-Sayan ecoregion to include a component on climate change
The German government has supported UNDP initiative to allocate additional funds for the creation of new protected areas for forest ecosystems in the Altai-Sayan region.
A new component entitled ‘Expansion of the protected areas network for the conservation of the Altai-Sayan Region’ has been incorporated into the UNDP/GEF project ‘Biodiversity Conservation in the Russian Portion of the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion’ for implementation starting in 2010.
The project has received close to EUR 3,000,000 from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany (BMU), for the new component which will be conducted as an independent programme over the next two years.
The main objective of the initiative is to support the adaptation of forest ecosystems to climate change and to preserve their role as important carbon stores by converting over 500 000 hectares in the Altai-Sayan ecoregion into protected areas. In addition, the component will include the development and implementation of a fire prevention strategy in protected areas and the creation of an integrated climate change monitoring system. The programme aims at improving the sustainability of Siberian forests in the region and improve their resilience to climate change.
