30.06.2009. Update on the project on strengthening the protected area system of the Republic of Komi

On June 24-30 UNDP conducted a monitoring mission for UNDP/Global Environmental Facility project Strengthening Protected Area (PA) System of the Komi Republic (KR) to Conserve Virgin Forest Biodiversity in the Pechora River Headwaters Region. Ms. Adriana Dinu, the Regional Practice Leader for Environment and Energy & Regional Technical Advisor for Biodiversity from UNDP Bratislava Regional Centre and UNDP Moscow staff took part in a series of meetings with the Head of Rosprirodnadzor of the Komi Republic, Mr. A.N. Popov, representatives of the Komi protected areas and scientific institutions and the local project team to access and discuss the project progress. On 26-29 the mission went on field trip through the project territory and visited the national park Yugyd va and Pechoro-Ilychsky nature biosphere reserve.







The UNDP/GEF project executed by the Rosprirodnadzor of the Komi Republic was launched end 2008 and is to be completed in 2013. The project is to achieve the following main results: (1) The PA system of Komi Republic is redesigned so as to better capture globally significant biodiversity; (2)Increased institutional capacity for management of protected areas within the KR PA system; (3) Application of business planning principles result in diversified revenue streams for the KR PA system.







In November 2008 the project inception workshop was conducted in Syktyvkar. The project Coordination Committee was created to include i.a. the representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia, Government of the KR, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection of KR, Forestry Committee of RK, local municipalities, scientific and public organizations. By now working groups for each of the three project components have been created, first meetings held, work to conduct gap analysis and assess the biodiversity of all units of the KR PA system and to develop 5-year inventory plan for KR PA started. In 2009 the project is to develop the PA system strategic plan, initiate creation of the monitoring system for pristine boreal ecosystems of the KR, start development of management and business plans for the KR protected areas, launch pilot project on conservation and recreational development of the Weathering Columns, a unique nature object on the Plateau of Manpupuner, territory of the Pechoro-Ilychsky nature biosphere reserve.
