On March 1, a regular meeting of the National Steering Committee of the UNDP/GEF Project "Biodiversity Conservation in the Russian Part of the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion" was held. The Committee had met for the sixth time. This year it was attended by the project organizers, representatives of the government, as well as the heads of directorates of the protected areas (PAs) that had been established in the Altai Republic, Kemerovo, Khakassia, Krasnoyarsk Krai, and Tuva.

The participants of the meeting summarized the work under the project, discussed the achievements in the development and conservation of protected areas in the region, and discussed the work plan for 2012.

Sergei Vasin, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry of Krasnoyarsk Krai said that the government appreciated the contribution of the National Steering Committee to the conservation of biological and landscape diversity of the region – the issues that are crucial for this area. He noted that at the moment there were 93 PAs of regional importance in Krasnoyarsk Krai that covered an area of five million hectares. They included 32 federal wildlife reserves, 55 natural monuments, and other objects. Deputy Minister Vasin also said that in 2011 190 million rubles were allocated from the in regional budget to support the preservation of diversity of natural landscapes.

On hearing the report of the Kransnoyarsk government, the members of the National Steering Committee praised the work of the region in creating and maintaining the protected areas, particularly "Agap" and "Gorbita" reserves in the Taymyr Dolgan-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The project organizers also highly appreciated the government of Krasnoyark Krai for their active public involvement into the process, and expressed the hope that in the near future the reserves will be established.
