21,05.2011 The Volga Day celebration on the Central Embankment of Astrakhan took place.

This festive event that gathered 500 people was organized for Astrakhan citizens and the city guests by the UNDP/GEF Project Conservation of wetland biodiversity in the Lower Volga region supported by the UNESCO Bureau in Moscow and Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia within the frames of their joint program Living Volga. OOO LUKOIL-Nizhnevolzhskneft, MEGAFON-Povolzhye and Administration of the city of Astrakhan also acted as partners in the event.



The Volga Day was enlisted in the international ecological calendar in 2008. In Astrakhan this day started being celebrated in 2009, and each year the number of its participants increases.



On May, many grown-ups and children who are not indifferent to the fate of the Great river gathered at the big stage 21 on the Central Embankment near the Petrovskiy (singing) Fountain. The event was opened by Elena Tveritinova, the representative of the UNESCO Bureau in Moscow and Deputy national director of the UNDP/GEF Project Vladimir Pischelev. The words of greeting were addressed by the city Vice-Mayor Mikhail Stolyarov to Astrakhan citizens. All the speakers emphasized the importance of this day which is comparatively new but quickly gaining popularity, and expressed their hope that thanks to this day more people would be involved in settling ecological problems of the Lower Volga region.



On this day dancing teams, children creative groups winners of the contest of Ecological theatres, Astrakhan DJs performed for the spectators. For schoolchildren several thematic playgrounds were organized. The young Volga-natives had an opportunity to take part in the contest of asphalt drawings Lets draw our Volga, to show their knowledge in the ecological quiz The Volga is in our hearts, prove being the fastest and strongest on the sportsground Catch the wave and to become a model for ecological body-art. At the same time on the Embankment there was organized a graffiti contest We are responsible and everybody could choose the winner by means of sms-vote arranged by MEGAFON-Povolzhye. Interactive reports from the thematic playgrounds were also held.



The guests of the festive event and people walking along the Embankment had a opportunity to see the exhibition of the works of participants and winners of the interregional childrens ecological contest We are the Volga-natives that was held in April-May, 2011 within the frames of the UNDP/GEF Project component on raising ecological awareness. The winners in four nominations of this contest were awarded on the stage, and got diplomas and gifts, among which there was science-popular edition Birds of the Lower Volga a unique book published with financial support of the UNDP/GEF Project and OOO LUKOIL-Nizhnevolzhskneft. At the end of the event a lottery was organized.



The third Volga Day in Astrakhan is over, but has left only the brightest impressions and found its new fans.
