02.12.2011. UNDP/GEF K omi Republic project received a delegation of Turkey

A Turkish delegation composed of the executives of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, Forestry Administration and the countrys UNDP project finished their work in Syktyvkar.

According to the Deputy Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs Mahir Kuchuk, the delegation aimed at getting an idea of the UNDP/GEF KR PA project implementation progress and the republican experience in sustainable forest administration. The members of the delegation visited Syktyvdinsky and Knyazhpogostsky Districts to find out more about the carbon flows monitoring organized in the marsh and forest ecosystems. They also met with the republican leaders, executives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Komi and the Forestry Committee of the Republic of Komi, representatives of the Silver Taiga Foundation, scientists of the Institute of Biology of the Komi Science Centre and the UNDP/GEF Project Team.

Turkeys interest in the UNDP/GEF Project activities in the Republic of Komi is quite natural. Over a 2.5 year period the Project has achieved significant results in terms of the protected area infrastructure development and conservation of the biodiversity.

Special attention was given to studying the experience and implementation progress of the Project Forest Carbon Component within the framework of the International Climate Initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany.

We are preparing to implement a UNDP project in our country and would like to study your experience to apply it in Turkey, said Mahir Kuchuk, A quarter of Turkeys area is covered by forests which are currently in a deplorable state. Protected areas occupy only 4% of our countrys territory and it is very little. We intend to increase this indicator at least up to 10%.

There is a special directorate at the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs of Turkey which is responsible for protected areas, while in the Republic of Komi such a state PA management agency has not been established yet.

In spite of the fact that it was a business trip, the visitors managed to see and appreciate the beauty of the northern nature.

In the forest here I felt just like at home, said Mahir Kuchuk, I even managed to recognize alder trees although they have already shed their leaves.
