16.12.2011 Annual Meeting of the UN Global Compact Network Russia took place in Moscow

In 2011 the UN Global Compact Network Russia intensified its effort in different directions related to promotion of the Global Compact principles in Russia as well as increased significantly, virtually for one third, the number of its participants. This key message was delivered at the annual meeting that took place in Moscow on December 16, 2011. Presently, the UN Global Compact Network Russia includes more than 50 profit and non-profit organizations joined to follow and promote 10 universal principles of the United Nations in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.

The annual meeting reviewed the Networks progress in the current year and defined the most important Networks activity areas for 2012.

It was declared that in 2011 the UN Global Compact Network Russia had arranged a number of events related with the new UN standard in the area of business and human rights protection, collaboration of business and ingenious peoples, business participation in anti-corruption etc. The Network extended its contacts with various Russian and international associations, including the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, Association of the Indigenous small numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation as well as strengthened its collaboration with the UN Global Compact Networks in other countries.

Joining the UN Global Compact, companies voluntary undertake commitments in the area of sustainable development; and therefore, contribute to social progress - said Andrey Galaev, Chairman of Steering Committee of the UN Global Compact Network Russia, opening the meeting. Our goal is to expand the Network, attract new participants so that more companies in Russia follow the standards of responsible business doing accepted in the international community - added Andrey Galaev.

Representatives from business and public sectors, NGO and academia as well as official United Nations representatives participated in the annual meeting.

A significant sign demonstrating support of this international initiative from the side of the Russian government was the message of Alexander Zhukov, Vice-Chairman of Government of the Russian Federation, who emphasized the importance of implementation of the UN Global Compact ideas in Russia.
