13.07.2011. Volga-Akhtubinskaya floodplain is included to the UNESCO world biosphere reserve net

Volga-Akhtubinskaya floodplain has become the first nature reserve on region level in Russia which is included to the list of UNESCO project biosphere reserves. The decision to include the flood plain to this list was accepted at the meeting of international coordination council of the UNESCO program Man and biosphere, which hold place in Dresden, 28 June -1 July, 2011. Today 580 objects from 14 countries are included to the list.



Volda-Akhtubinskaya floodplain is the unique nature creation in semi desert region of Russian South. Analogues for this area double delta-plain, oasis between arid territories are few in the World. The ecosystem of the floodplain is represented by a mosaic structure of different landscapes including rich floodplain meadow, dense poplar and elm grove, small picturesque waterways - Eric lakes, wetlands, nesting and recreational sites of birds and spawning sites of sturgeon of the global significance. About 800 plant species and 300 animal species are found there.



The application for including flood plain to the list of biosphere reserves was submitted by the Committee for Natural Resources and Environment and its subordinate state institution "Nature Park" Volga-Akhtuba floodplain to the international coordination council as far back as in 2010. The UNDP/GEF project Conservation of Wetland Biodiversity in the Lower Volga Region significantly helped the Committee with the application formation. With request to support the initiative to include the park territory to list of UNESCO biosphere reserves the Committee applied as to The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources as to The Minister of Environment of RF, Maidanov I.I.



Including the nature reserve to this net allow to solve a number of ecological and social challenges, among which are the  etalon nature areas protection , the protection of live sustaining systems of local region population, the agricultural development without environmental hazard, the support of environmental management. And at the first place, the new status of the park Volga-Akhtubinskaya floodplain will facilitate coordination of efforts at all government levels and of other organizations aimed to rational management and sustainable reproduction of its recourse. The status promotion of the nature park will also help attract public and scientists to the reservation problems of the unique nature territory including the problem of poor irrigation.
