UNDP projects manager Mikhail Babenko presented report “Information technology for the development goals: UNDP experience” at VII Social and Economic Forum “Information society” in Tver city on July, 8-9.
This year a great number of participants, more than 2,000 people, visited the Forum, including top-ranking officials, representatives of business, NGO’s and media. During two days the Forum served as an expert platform for discussing such issues as information society development in Russia, electronic government formation in Russia, monitoring of obtained results, defining of future priorities.
Mikhail Babenko presented his report at the panel “International experience of information society development”. The report dealt with applied issues of information technology using for development goals. UNDP is the global organization presented in 166 countries and information technology allows unite accumulated experience and use it for solving local development goals. In 2005 with help of internet technologies Solution Exchange virtual network was founded in India. Now there are 12 such communities that unite 15,000 experts on problem areas: HIV/AIDS, maternity and childhood protection, micro financing, climate change. In 2009 in Russia similar society on energy and energy efficiency was created, and it is expected that in fall 2010 community on local governance will start functioning. Another direction is promotion of human development concept through the Internet. Internet-portal on human development is being created and will include two parts. The first part is on-line educational course on human development which will simplify the access to knowledge that is going to become actual in Russia and CIS countries. The second part is statistics database with human development indicators.
Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmir Valizadeh also took part at the panel and told about information society development in his country. Sergei Kambalov, the Global Alliance for ICT and Development Executive Coordinator noted that the Alliance responds to the need and demand for an inclusive global forum and platform for cross-sectoral policy dialogue on the use of ICT for enhancing the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, notably reduction of poverty.
