23.12.2009. UN summed up the results of 2009

The business breakfast, organized by the UNDP and the Fund Narodnaya Initsiativa, was held on December 23, 2009 in the UN House in Moscow at 9 Leontyevsky Pereulok.

The event brought together the leading journalists and observers covering the topics of international development and UN activities in Russia and abroad.

The main speaker for the event was Mr. Frode Mauring, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in the Russian Federation. In his opening remarks Mr. Mauring informed the journalists on the current status of the efforts to move towards Millennium Development Goals in Russia and globally. He also shared his impressions of the participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, the discussions which took place there and the summit results.

The plans for realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the context of Russia were also discussed at the business breakfast. One of the results was signing of Memorandum of Understanding between UNDP and the Russian Center for Realization of Millennium Development Goals on joint actions for promoting MDGs and international development assistance in Russia.

Within the framework for cooperation with UNDP, the Russian Center for Realization of Millennium Development Goals is expected to become an effective instrument for disseminating information on the recent challenges of the Millennium and facilitating the efforts of the Russian society towards finding solutions to the global issues.

Summarizing up the results for the year 2009, Mr. Mauring expressed his appreciation to those journalists who made significant contribution to media coverage of the activities undertaken by the Russian and international organization in the area of MDGs achievement in 2009.

Some correspondents were awarded honourable certificates. Among the organizations honoured were the International Policy Information Service of ITAR-TASS news agency, Diplomatic Panorama Department of Interfax News Agency, Social Information Agency, Ecology and Life journal, Voice of Russia radio station.
