30.06.2009 Round-table - Regional risks in Central Asia
UNDP-organized round-table "Regional risks in Central Asia: Opportunities for Russia’s Assistance to International Development" was held on 30 June, 2009 in the UN Moscow Office.
The presentation of the report “Central Asia Regional Risk Assessment” and Framework for Action, prepared by UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS, was conducted within the roundtable. The report was presented by one of its authors - Mr. Ben Slay, Senior Economist of UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS, and provided the updated assessment of risks in Central Asian countries as a result of the current global economic crisis and deteriorating climate conditions in the region.
The discussion brought together the representatives of Russian government agencies, Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC), leading Russian experts and focused on the ways of providing international assistance to the poorest countries in the region to effectively respond to water, energy and food insecurities, as well as concrete measures to ensure Russia’s participation in the international community’s assistance to these countries.
Tom Kelly, Head of UK Department for International Development (DFID) in Russia, briefed the participants on the programmes implemented by DFID in Central Asia.
The above event has been widely covered in mass media. The follow-up meetings and discussions will form the basis for further work in this area, in particular, by contributing to preparation for a donor coordinating meeting on these issues to be held in Almaty (Kazakhstan), on 20-21 July, 2009.
