UNDP participated in the XIII International Festival of Journalists All Russia- 2008 with a Human Development Course

From 24-30 September, around 1,500 journalists from all over Russia and guests from CIS and other countries gathered in Sochi for the XIII International Festival of Journalists All Russia- 2008. The festival included a wide variety of events, such as a congress of the Russian Union of Journalists, thematic sessions, workshops and round tables on professional issues and topics of interest, presentations and exhibitions, where rank-and-file journalists could meet with representatives of government bodies, experts, heads of leading medias, international and civil society organizations. International cooperation of the Union of Journalists and how it can contribute to the development of professional skills and widen the knowledge of topical issues among Russian journalists was high on the agenda.

UNDP contributed to this by organizing a Human Development Course for a group of journalists from CIS countries, as well as participants of the Festival. Andrey Ivanov, a human development expert from UNDP Bratislava Regional Centre, explained the Human Development Concept, how it had evolved and why it was important. He also presented the recently published UNDP manual Measuring Corruption, which includes information on various corruption indicators. Natalya Zubarevich, a Russian Human Development expert from Moscow State University, presented the regional aspects of human development in Russia.

A UNDP stand at a vast exhibition presenting a variety of printed and electronic media, publishing houses and journalistic associations, attracted the participants by an exhibit of analytical reports, manuals, and other materials, including global and national Human Development Reports from Russia and several other countries of CIS region.
