On 1-2 August 2008 in the Avachinsky Pass of the Nalychevo Natural Park, an environmental festival was held with the financial and organizational support of the UNDP/GEF project Conservation of Biodiversity in Kamchatka.

It has become a tradition to organise environmental festivals in the Nalychevo Natural Park Bear Festival was held here in summer 2006 and Birds Festival in July 2007.

Last weekend at the foot of the Avacha Volcano the environmental Volcano Festival was held.

Schoolchildren, students, tourists and visitors of the Natural Park, as well as guests from other Russian regions took part in this remarkable event.

Experts of the Volcanology Institute Alexander Ovsyannikov, Sergey Samoilenko and Tatiana Manevich presented exciting reports on vulcanicity on earth and in space. Nalychevo Natural Park specialists prepared quizzes and games for the participants.

Participants sang songs by fire till dawn.

In the morning a group of participants climbed the Avacha Volcano, while another, guided by Alexander Ovsyannikov, had field practice in the area of the so called Camel Mountain. Fine weather contributed to the great impressions of the participants.

We would like to thank the festival organizers and once again encourage local residents and guests to get involved more in outdoor activities in the area.
