04.06.2010 UNDP participates in World Environment Day Celebration at Russian Academy of Science
World Environment Day is marked every June 5th. Russia has also marked Ecologist’s Day on June 5th since the year 2007, a professional holiday of nature conservationists.
Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation organised special event to celebrate this Date. The event was held at Russian Academy of Science on the 4th of June. The representatives of the biggest environmental agencies and journalists were invited there. Greeting speeches from Russian president Medvedev and minister of Natural Resources Trutnev were read out by representative of Rosprirodnadzor Agency. Then VIP guests have delivered an address to the public.
‘The theme of this year celebrations is ‘Many Species: One Planet, One Future’, which reflects the overall context of the International Year of Biodiversity declared by the UN General Assembly. It is an opportunity to stress the importance of biodiversity for human well-being, review our achievements to safeguard it, and encourage an even greater effort in this field.
Russia’s natural resources, vast expanse of undisturbed natural ecosystems, very large potential for carbon sequestration and mitigation makes it a global environmental donor. That is why Russia’s national environmental policies and development strategies are of immense importance globally. And that is why Russia is an important partner for the United Nations, Global Environmental Facility, and other international organizations’ – said Frode Mauring, United Nations Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Russia.
There was a ceremony of awarding in the domain of environment. The best media report on environment, eco- education project, environmental scientific project and eco-technology got the awards from the well-known people from their fields.
All this will help to ecologically “update” the Russian economy and to ensure this country’s innovative development, and is a major contribution to global ecological preservation, said a representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Russia Frode Mauring to ‘Voice of Russia’ radio station.
In his interview Frode Mauring also said: “Russia has shaped an ecological policy, one that the UNDP supports. Now is the time for making the correct decisions, which is a difficult a problem, since it calls for major capital investment. We hope that all decisions made will be translated in real action. Besides, Russia could make economic gains by boosting energy conservation and energy efficiency. We welcome Russia’s contribution to achieving global-scale objectives on the basis of specific ecology-related moves.”
